However, given the land and space we have access to here, we hope to create our own environment: one that reflects our needs and wishes, and offers a sense of withdrawal from the weight of everyday life. We also acknowledge that we are located in a region deeply marked by colonial history, where violence continues to be perpetuated in many forms: epistemically, through the labor conditions of those working the land, the ongoing exploitation of people and resources from the Global South, the many expressions of institutional racism, and the continued bloodshed in the Mediterranean Sea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because our space centers BIPoC experiences, we, as a community, strive to minimize cultural appropriation in every possible way. This includes, for example, avoiding dreadlocks, braids, and bindis when they are not part of one\u2019s own cultural heritage.
